Readers Workshop and Centers

Readers Workshop and Centers

  • Reading workshop begins with the students gathered on a carpet or in their desks where the teacher will begin their mini lesson.

  •  Teacher links that days lesson with their previous lesson the day before.

  • The teacher will use the specific point of what he or she will be teaching today.
  •  The teacher than models and demonstrates to the students what they are being taught.
    books on shelves
  • After modeling the strategies for the students they are to practice (Active engaging).
  • Students can practice the new strategies in groups or in pairs.
  •  Active engagement can also be geared towards independent practice.
  • The class can make a graph chart
  •  The teacher will than explain the task and the students will work independently.
  • Individualize Daily Reading (IDR): Helps students discover the joy of reading, and build a reading habit. This can be located in the classroom's library. Each book can have a certain color to help define what reading level a student is at.
  • Students may use sticky notes record the thinking they do while they are reading
  •  During IDR time the teacher can sit in the back of the classroom with several students and begin a small group instruction.

Why is Reading Workshop Important?
It is important because the students get to collaborate their thoughts and ideas about the books they are reading. They are able to analyze a story by using several different techniques. The students can use character charts, sticky notes, KWL chart (what they KNOW, what you want to know and what they WANT to LEARN) and many more. Reading workshop helps increase the students thinking development.

Workshop Environment:
A workshop environment should be focused on a healthy setting.  The environment should have an area for the students to focus and be comfortable when they are reading.  It should have different tools the student(s) can use as a reflection upon their reading. (Tools such as technology, which can help the student(s) with text read out loud, definitions, highlighting, bookmarking, and much more.  It is great for ELL and diverse learners
