Vocabulary Development

Vocabulary Development

Vocabulary development is the key to literacy, especially children’s literacy. Vocabulary development helps the reader or student broaden their horizon of vocabulary.  It will increase the reader’s knowledge of new words. Vocabulary in literature is the key to understanding what the author is talking about.  As a reader there should be context clues to understanding a new word throughout the story.  Vocabulary development can be used everyday, whether it is speaking to a peer or reading a text.  Vocabulary will always be a key element in a everyday activity.  Vocabulary is not only seen in literacy and phonics, but in other subjects as well. For example: Mathematics uses several different vocabulary words which can help the student understand the concept of that subject.  Mathematics Vocabulary wordRadiusa straight line from the center to the circumference of a circle or sphere.  It can also be seen in other subjects such as social studies and science.)
