Types of Reading




Reading Aloud: Having the teacher read aloud is a great way for the students to understand the concept of the text. This is primarily done with students in grades 8th and below; however, some high school teachers also read aloud to their class.  Reading aloud helps benefit the students’ understanding of the text. While the teacher is reading aloud they can express their emotions with the correct punctuation; this will keep the students engaged rather than struggling with the text. Reading aloud is a benefit for the students who are struggling readers. Text read aloud can be provided with technology.  Readers can use CD’s, computers or tables with the text recorded on it. 
Why is reading aloud important?  

  • It allows children to enjoy books that are too difficult to read on their own.
  • Student may be at a certain grade level of reading, but what about listing? 
  • Children love to listen to stories!
  • Students will begin to create their own imagery of the text. IMAGINATION!
  • Students can learn the characters personality by the person who is reading aloud.

Types of Text:
-          Colorful literature
-          Multicultural books or themes
-          Action books
-          Drama books
-          Humorous books
-          Informational books








Guided Reading:
When a teacher works with a small group of students, who are placed in a similar reading level. The teacher will have the students read the same text that is appropriate for their reading level.  The teacher may sit aside each student individually, and have the student whisper the text to the teacher in the teacher’s ear.  The teacher will continue this pattern and mark what level the student is reading at. (If the student has progressed and increased on their reading, or decreased by the text the teacher had assigned)

Why is Guided Reading important?

  •  It provided opportunities for students to receive assistance on text they are having difficulty in.
  • Provides a opportunities for the students to  receive support by using different reading strategies.
  • t can allow the teacher focus on the students who are having trouble with reading text at a specific level

Types of Text:
-          Text that will gradually increase the students’ reading level.
-          Text that is appropriate for students’ reading level.
-          Informational text
-          Engaging text for students’ grade level.


Shared Reading:


 Depending on the grade level shared reading is an engaging way to have students come together and read a book.  It is a shared literacy experience for the whole class.

Why is shared reading 
important?

  • t allows the class to enjoy a text that can be informal and engaging.
  • It increases the students knowledge of new literacy
  • Great way for students to interact about their favorite books by sharing it with the     class
  • Teacher can use a big book and share it with the class by reading aloud.  The         students will be able to enjoy this engaging activity.


Independent Reading:

Students are able to read books independently chosen by themselves or their teacher. Students get to use their independent reading as a practice guide for harder text. Students also get to increase their imagination on their own when reading the text to themselves.



Why is independent reading important?


  • It helps the students’ increase their vocabulary by reading independently
  • Helps the students’ sound out and define new words.
  • Challenges the students’ to read a text above their reading level.
  • Creates new imaginations of characters in the students’ head.
  • Allows the students’ to choose their own books
